- Company profile:
Basque Films is a production company with a consolidated track record working in drama and documentary.
We are currently working on production of the documentary feature film “El largo viaje” (“The Long Journey”). The project is related to the process of recuperating the historical memory of the Spanish Civil War and describes, starkly and directly, the appalling, and sometimes fatal conditions under which Republicans prisoners were transported into forced labour.
- Last productions:
In the area of documentary film, we have worked on projects such as “Tras un largo silencio” (“After a Long Silence”) by Sabin Egilior and “Carta a mi madre” (“Letter to my Mother”) by Algis Arlauskas. The latter has won awards at a number of international festivals, including the ONCE Tiflos prize for journalism. We have also produced other documentaries on the process of recovering the historical memory in Spain, including “Udazkena oraindik” and “Séptimo día”.
Our involvement with drama productions includes co-producing the feature films “2 Rivales casi iguales” by Miguel Angel C. Buttini, “Déjate caer” by Jesús Ramírez Ponce and “Lokarri” by Jean-Pierre Grasset, and we were also involved in “Hoy no se fía, mañana sí” by Francisco Avizanda and “Ouija” by Juan Pedro Ortega.
We have also worked extensively in the area of short film, producing more than twenty films by directors such as: Nacho Vigalondo, Koldo Serra, Haritz Zubillaga, Emilio Pérez and Igor Legarreta. In all, these projects have won over a hundred top national and international awards.
- Projects in Progress:
- El largo viaje (The Long Journey): after the fall of the Northern front in the Spanish Civil War, Franco's troops began to move Republican prisoners-of-war en masse to concentration camps in fascist-controlled areas. One group was loaded onto a goods train to be taken on a 3-day journey to the south of Spain under the most appalling conditions. They would never arrive. Shortly before reaching their destination, a tremendous accident killed over fifty of those on board. To this day, the exact circumstances remain a mystery
