Basque Audiovisual is to take the Basque industry’s latest productions to Cannes

  • From this year onwards, the Etxepare Institute will lead efforts towards the internationalisation of Basque Audiovisual in collaboration with Eiken-Basque Audiovisual Cluster.
  • On this occasion, the Basque Audiovisual stand will be located in the Riviera Hall, in the Fair’s main pavilion, and will represent 11 Basque companies.

Bilbao, 21 Marzo. Basque Audiovisual will once again participate in MIPTV, the International Audiovisual and Digital Content Market held in Cannes, considered one of the most important in the world for creation, co-production, purchase, sales, financing and distribution of entertainment content for all platforms. Basque audiovisual international brand will be present for the fifth year running at this event with its own stand in the Riviera Hall (stand R31.29).

The Basque delegation, under the Basque Audiovisual brand, will take the following companies to Cannes: 3Koma, Bainet, EiTB, Expressive, Mediabask, Moztu Filmak, My Jok, Orio Produkzioak and Pausoka, as well as producer Eriz Zapirain, the Vitoria-Gasteiz Film Office officials and the Etxepare Institute’s director, Aizpea Goenaga, and Eiken’s director, Itziar Mena. They will thus be able to avail of the opportunity to advertise Basque products to the world’s main distributors and likewise get to know the latest trends in the sector over the event’s four days, from 4 to 7 April. .

This joint initiative by Eiken and the Etxepare Institute guarantees the presence of the Basque audiovisual industry in the main international showcase, and boosts companies’ sales and marketing business. In this respect, apart from the companies physically present at the Fair, the Basque Audiovisual stand will offer direct information on 41 Basque companies with the aid of its international catalogue. What’s more, this information will be available at the recently revamped www.basqueaudiovisual.com website, Basque Audiovisual’s online catalogue.

Transformation of the sector
According to data from the organisation, MIPTV 2011 aims at bringing together over 11,500 participants from 107 different countries. The main objective is to facilitate and promote the industry’s commercial facet and, in fact, over 1,500 exhibitors and 4,000 potential buyers have signed up. In addition, 45 lectures and workshops have been planned for the convention’s four days, with the participation of major players in the world’s audiovisual industry.

Apart from the usual activities, this year, MIPTV is to pay special attention to the transformation of the sector and to the development of the digital content industry. In fact, for the first time there is to be a specific section concerning "Connected Creativity", in which developments combining technology, the mobile phone and entertainment will be presented. There will also be sessions dedicated to 3D television and “connectable” devices.

Among the speakers, of particular note are Hans Vestberg, President and CEO of Ericsson, entrusted with the keynote speech, Christian Hernández-Gallardo, head of international business development at Facebook, Claire Tavernier from FremantleMedia, and Luke Bradley-Jones, managing director of BBC.com and iPlayer.
