Basque Audiovisual: meet us at MIPCOM 2009, the world's audiovisual and digital content market

This October, at MIPCOM-08 in Cannes, Basque Audiovisual will present the most original formats

Tuesday, 22 July 2008

In early October a total of 19 companies from among the most outstanding components of the Basque audiovisual panorama will participate in MIPCOM, which will be held in Cannes (France), –the world’s largest audiovisual content market–, yet again under the unitary brand name Basque Audiovisual. The catalogue of products includes some of the most novel and successful formats produced in Euskadi, covering programmes of entertainment, documentaries, animation, and much more.

Although there has been a constant presence of Basque companies from the Audiovisual Sector in the main markets and international fairs for some decades now, the Basque Audiovisual Cluster Eiken decided to intensify this role, encouraging the joint participation of companies from the sector grouped together as Basque Audiovisual. Having taken part in various international events, this brand has consolidated itself and enjoys recognition as a mark of identity of audiovisual product created in Euskadi, while also representing the ability of companies to engage in collaboration, in the interests of achieving common objectives for the sector.

In the 2007 edition, 245 companies took part in the Cannes MIPCOM from all over the Spanish State. Basque Audiovisual represented 7% of this figure, occupying third place in terms of the number of companies, after Madrid and Barcelona. This time the Basque delegation has increased the number of companies attending the call by 12%. The trade mission will comprise: 3Koma, Baleuko, Canal Euskadi, Expressive, Flying Apple, Gizer, Idem, Irusoin, Jarkatza, K2000, MediaBost, Orio Produkzioak, Pausoka, Retelsat, Western, Signo Digital, Silverspace, Somuga and Virtualware.

The Basque Audiovisual brand has its own online Internet commercial catalogue (www.basqueaudiovisual.com), which proved last year to be an effective tool for establishing previous contacts and for setting up work encounters with potential customers and collaborators during the fair.

In this connection, during the month of September an Internet promotional campaign will be launched with a presentation mailing to thousands of contacts directly associated with the audiovisual sector all over the world. The idea is to encourage access to Basque Audiovisual’s online catalogue, where contact information and presentations covering all the companies and their work are to be found.

THE PROJECT

The Basque Audiovisual project goes back to 2006, which was when, in collaboration with the Basque Government’s Department of Culture, Eiken contacted ICEX to define the personalised participation model for the Basque Audiovisual Sector’s projection at the fair. The Cluster’s target was to stimulate the attendance of a significant number of companies, entities and organisations associated with the audiovisual sector at MIPCOM, so that they would be able to display their products and make useful contacts, while boosting the image of the Basque Audiovisual Sector with a brand name and personally differentiated space in Cannes.

The presentation of Basque Audiovisual as a brand for the Basque audiovisual industry on an international scale happened at the last edition of the Cannes MIPCOM and resulted in a positive balance sheet for the companies, which managed to close commercial agreements and make high-value contacts for the promotion and internationalisation of their products. After that, Basque Audiovisual took part in MIPTV 08 and, in June of this year, in the Sunny side of the Doc, one of the biggest international competitions dealing with the documentary genre.
