- La Chanson de Roland ( A Documentary Film by Olivier Van Der Zee)
Millions of people around Europe have studied the Song of Roland in secondary school and it is an essential piece of our shared cultural heritage.
The battle of Roncesvalles was the only military defeat suffered by the French army, captained by Emperor Charlemagne in person and the poem tells how on 15 August 778 the French were attacked by 400,000 Saracens on the southern flank of the western Pyrenees.
Today, however, historians agree on a number of points: far from being a major battle, the real event amounted to little more than an insignificant skirmish; the exact location of the encounter has yet to be identified and it is highly unlikely that any Moslems were involved in the conflict.
But 1200 years after the original events told in the poem, how much truth is there really behind the story?
